Transforming the Jet Ski Tour Experience

WOW Marco Island Jet Ski Tours & Rentals approached COG media with an existing website that needed some attention. While the original site contained plenty of useful information about their jet ski tours and experiences, its overall functionality was beginning to feel a little clunky. Navigating the site wasn’t as straightforward as it could be, and making even relatively small changes to tour information could involve editing large sections of individual pages.

There were also some underlying performance issues. Many of the images used throughout the website were considerably larger than they needed to be for the spaces in which they were displayed. This meant visitors, particularly those browsing on mobile devices, were potentially downloading much larger files than necessary.

Another area we felt could be improved was the way the tours themselves were presented. All the tour information was simply included as part of the page content, rather than being managed as individual listings. This made the site more difficult to maintain and offered little flexibility as the business developed its range of experiences.

The brief was therefore about more than simply giving the website a facelift. We wanted to make the whole experience smoother, improve performance and, most importantly, give the WOW team a much more practical way of managing their tours and website content.

What we did

Seamless Migration & Platform Continuity

Upgrading an active e-commerce store requires precise technical care. The Pawfect Apparel Company already had a substantial customer base, an active sales history, and established payment gateway configurations that could not be compromised or reset.

To guarantee zero downtime and preserve critical user data, we migrated the existing website directly into our tried-and-tested staging environment. Because the original site was built on the Elementor framework, lifting the site across to our optimized stack was a straightforward process.

This approach allowed us to:

Getting Under the Bonnet

Rather than immediately starting from scratch, we took the existing website and transferred a working copy into our development environment. This allowed us to get properly acquainted with how everything was put together, identify the areas that needed attention and make improvements without interfering with the live website.

One of our first priorities was the imagery.

We downloaded the original image library and worked through the photographs, resizing and optimising them to better suit their intended use. There is little point serving a huge photograph when it is only going to appear in a relatively small space on a mobile screen. By reducing unnecessary file sizes while retaining visual quality, we were able to create a much more efficient image library.

This was particularly important for a business like WOW, where photography plays such a big part in selling the experience. Visitors want to see the beautiful waters around Marco Island, the jet skis and, of course, the wildlife and scenery they might encounter along the way.

The aim was to retain the impact of the original imagery while reducing the amount of data visitors needed to download. This helped improve the overall performance of the website, particularly across mobile platforms.

A Better Way to List the Tours

One of the biggest changes we made was to the way the jet ski tours were organised and displayed.

Previously, the tours were simply written into the page content. While this worked from a visitor’s point of view, it wasn’t particularly practical for the people managing the website. Changing a price, adjusting a tour description or updating a point of interest could mean going into an entire page and searching through its content.

We felt there was a much better way of doing this.

We created a dedicated tour listing structure, allowing each experience to be managed as an individual item. Rather than having everything tied into one large page, each tour could now have its own information, including descriptions, pricing, timings and points of interest.

We also linked the individual listings through to the relevant booking forms, giving visitors a much clearer journey from discovering a tour to taking the next step and making an enquiry or reservation.

Behind the scenes, this made a considerable difference to how the website could be maintained. The WOW team could now update individual tours without having to edit an entire page just to make a relatively simple change.

It’s a good example of how a little thought behind the website’s structure can make a big difference to the people using it every day. A website shouldn’t just look good to customers; it should also work hard for the business behind it.

Bringing the Experience to Life with Artwork and Video

When you’re selling an experience rather than a physical product, good imagery is essential.

Working closely with WOW’s media team, we reviewed and updated the imagery used throughout the website. We wanted to make sure the photographs reflected the excitement of getting out on the water and gave potential customers a real feel for what they could expect.

Video also played an important part in this process. Static photographs are great for showing the scenery, but moving images can capture the atmosphere, excitement and sheer enjoyment of a jet ski adventure in a way that words alone simply cannot.

We incorporated video content to help bring the tours to life and give visitors a better understanding of the experience on offer.

We also introduced a dedicated gallery page, providing a central place for visitors to explore more of the imagery and get a feel for the different experiences available.

The intention was to make the website more visual, more engaging and, ultimately, more inspiring for someone considering booking a tour.

Answering the Questions Before They’re Asked

For someone who has never been on a jet ski before, booking a tour can come with plenty of questions.

What should I bring? Do I need previous experience? Are there age restrictions? What happens if the weather changes? What are the rules when riding on Florida’s waterways?

These are all perfectly reasonable questions, and having to search around or contact the business for every little detail can sometimes be enough to put a potential customer off.

We therefore added a comprehensive FAQ section to the website, covering the important information visitors might need before booking.

This wasn’t simply about filling a page with questions and answers. We wanted to make sure customers had access to useful, relevant information that would help them feel more confident about taking part.

There are important rules and regulations surrounding the use of personal watercraft in Florida, so making this information accessible was particularly valuable. It also gave WOW a useful place to address common queries and explain what customers could expect from their experience.

By putting these answers in one easy-to-find location, we helped remove some of the uncertainty that can come with trying something new.

The Outcome

The Outcome

Once the development work was complete, the updated website was transferred back to WOW’s chosen US-based hosting provider.

The result was a much more streamlined and manageable website, with improved image optimisation, a clearer way of presenting the tours and a more engaging experience for visitors.

Behind the scenes, the new tour management structure made it easier for the team to keep information up to date, amend prices and make changes without having to work through lengthy page layouts.

For customers, the improvements meant a more straightforward journey through the website, with better access to tour information, booking links, videos, photography and answers to those all-important questions.

Of course, a website is never really finished. Businesses evolve, offers change and new experiences come along. We left WOW with a more flexible platform that could continue to grow alongside the business, making it easier to introduce new tours, update existing information and keep the website relevant.

COG media also continues to support the website with ongoing updates and additions, including changes to promotional offers and general content as required.

For us, this project was a great example of what good website development is all about. It’s not always about starting again or making everything look completely different. Sometimes the biggest improvements come from looking carefully at what already exists, understanding where the frustrations are and finding smarter ways to make things work.
